Deer Scarer "Shishi-Odoshi"

The shishi Odoshi or "deer scarer" was originally used by Japanese farmers to scare off deer and boar from their rice crops , and later it has become part of the Japanese garden , with the regular hollow knocking sound and running water made by the shishi-odoshi complements the serenity and silence of the Japanese garden today.

As the water flows from the "Kakehi" or bamboo water spout into the end of the shishi-odoshi the pivoted length of bamboo is tipped forward and the water runs out and then falls back onto a stone to create the "knocking noise"
The regular hollow knocking sound and running water made by the shishi-odoshi complements the serenity and silence of the Japanese garden. Set on the edge of a pond or stream or " Dry" for decorative purposes the bamboo deer scarer is an essential and interesting element of any Japanese garden.

Our authentic Japanese shishi -Odoshi are hand made in Japan using traditional methods of construction using "Scorched timber "and Bamboo and have the decorative Ura-jumoni-aya (back cross knot) tied in shuronawa (black hemp).

Our large Japanese deer scarer (Shishi-Odoshi) will grace your Japanese garden with that authentic look. Carefully hand crafted in Japan of thick walled 8/10mm yellow bamboo 840mm long x 75mm dia (33"x 3") with scorched and aged timber support frame 640x 280 ( 25.25" x 11.75") with bamboo pivot and tied with a black hemp decorative knot. The frame on this model should be set into the ground, close to the waters edge or even in the water! You will also need to place a stone under the end of pivoted portion, to produce the characteristic "Clack" sound.
Some minor assembly is required.

Small free standing deer scarer (Shishi-Odoshi) ideal for that small space or courtyard, beautifully hand crafted in Japan from yellow bamboo with scorched timber base and brown mottled bamboo sound chamber, main body 670x 55 mm dia (26.5 x 2.125"dia) Base 330 x 180 x 230high (13" x 7" x 9") finished with tied decorative knot in black hemp in the traditional Japanese style. May be set in gravel or moss. Some assembly may be required.
